Welcome to the memorial page for

Janet Schornak

August 30, 1932 ~ January 3, 2018 (age 85)

Janet Louise Bennett Schornak, 85, beloved daughter, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother died peacefully Wednesday, January 3, 2018. Born August 30, 1932, in Columbus, Ohio, Janet was the daughter of the late Adam and Loretta (Feist) Bennett.

Janet demonstrated artistic talent at a young age. Her parents encouraged her with lessons. She became a skilled oil painter and eventually studied art education for two years at The Ohio State University (OSU).  On June 13, 1953, Janet married Donald G. Schornak, Sr. and began their 64 years together.  They lived in Columbus until Donald finished OSU Law School and then moved to Dayton with two children. After five more children arrived, they moved to Jamestown. Settling on their 63-acre farm, they welcomed their eighth child and enjoyed nearly 50 years raising their children, many animals, and crops.

While managing the farm and their growing family, Janet was actively involved with many local groups. She was a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia, administered and taught religious education, and vacation Bible school at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Janet helped with the Greene County 4-H Program as an advisor. She started the first dairy goat 4-H club (The Goat-tees) and was instrumental in starting the dairy, market, and harness goat programs in the county. Eventually, Janet began working with Donald in his Xenia law practice until he retired. They spent years serving clients and assisting many who otherwise could not afford an attorney’s help.

All who met Janet were instantly at ease because of her warm, welcoming smile. She loved living with Donald and her family on Spruce Knob Farm, named after her father’s birthplace on the West Virginia mountain.  She was an avid fishermen and admirer of nature, especially cloud formations and sunsets. Janet also appreciated music and could often be heard humming a melodious tune.

Janet is survived by her husband, Donald, and her brother-in-law Richard (Carolyn) Schornak of Urbana. Also surviving are her eight children: Donald, Jr. (Karen) of Cincinnati; Thomas (Cheryl) of Cincinnati; Daniel (April) of Fairborn; Timothy (Mary Ann) of Jamestown; Kathleen (Samuel) Wooldridge of Corpus Christi, TX; Robert (Michelle) of Murray, KY; Mary Rose (Donald “Joe”) Howell of Xenia; and, Bennett (Mindy) of Cheyenne, WY; her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; cousins; and, countless friends.
